Reading: In Reading, we started our new unit on different types of nonfiction books. The first genre we are studying is biographies. We started read A Picture Book On Martin Luther King Jr. by David Adler during shared reading time. It was amazing to hear the questions and thought provoking discussions the students were able to have about the topics in this book. Students explored a multitude of biographies on their own though our school library and Epic. Math: In Math, we finished the unit by studying arrays and and how we can use arrays to solve multiplication number stories and problems. Students had a lot of practice in writing their own number stories and modeling their stories through arrays. Writing: In writing, we also started our new unit on biography writing. Students were asked to choose a person who they beleive was a great leader. Students explored adjectives that go with great leaders and tried to come up with adjectives that their chosen person possesses or possessed when they were alive. Science/ Social Studies : This week was exciting because we combined the building of our Pheonixville town with our studies in science. We realized that in our town we need a bridge that will take us from one side of the river to the other. We realized that our bridge will have to be strong enough to withstand an earthquake. Students practiced their knowledge of the engineering design process to come up with a model of a bridge that will withstand an earthquake ( the shaking of a desk). Students worked with a partner to plan, design, and build a model. Next week we will test our models and make our reflections.
