Reading: In Reading, we finished our nonfiction unit with our shared reading of Exploring The International Space Station. Students were very engaged throughout this reading and did what readers do by asking quesions, making inferences and using text features to guide our reading comprehension. Math: In Math, we started learning about perimeter and area. Students were introduced to both concepts using centimeter cubes. Writing: In writing, we finished publishing our biographies. Students added text features such as pictures and captions. We celebrated our work with our publishing party at the end of the week! Science/ Social Studies : S This week we have continued our work with our Pheonixville town map. We started studying the different communities: urban, suburban and rural. Students were given a community they would live in and they created their home with the characteristics of a home in their designated area. We will spend a few more days creating businesses and buildings that go with each community and adding them to our class map.

Reading: In Reading, we finished our Robot book and practiced finding the meaning of unknown words using prefixes and suffixes. Students continued to challenge themselves with longer nonfiction books. Math: In Math, we continued our study on Fractions. Students practiced finding equivalent fractions and we started solving fraction word problems. We ended the week preparing for our Unit 8 Math Test. Students will see the results next week. Writing: In writing, students are finishing up their biography writing. All students are in the publishing stage of writing and are paying close attention to detail in finishing their works and sharing them with the CDS community through the Book Project. Science/ Social Studies : Students finalized and uploaded their volcano project slides. Parents should see them in Seesaw soon! We have started a new unit on Communities in Social Studies. Reading: In Reading, we started a new nonfiction book titled, Robots. We talked about nonfiction reading strategies for reading longer nonfiction books like this one. Students practiced breaking up the ideas of longer sentences with a lot of information. We also worked on prefix strategies for solving unknown words. Best of all, we had special guests from the middle school come in and share the books they created on different animals. We loved seeing their creativity! Math: In Math, we continued our study on Fractions. We learned how to find fractions of a set or a collection. We also learned the difficult concept of equivalent fractions. Students have had many visual activities and games to help solididy these fraction concepts. Writing: In writing, students have continued to work on their biography writing. Students are now in the revising/ editing stage of their writing. We are having converstations about grammar and ways we can fix our writing to make it more engaging and easier for our reader to read. Science/ Social Studies : After finally erupting our volcanoes, this week was a time to reflect on our projects. Students started the technology component of our unit and created a google slide to go with their volcano project. Students were in charge of choosing their photos for the google slide presentation and adding their thoughts. Families will see these slides in Seesaw soon! Reading: In Reading, we are continuing to read nonfiction books. Through shared reading, we are exploring how to keep track of all the information in longer nonfiction books. We practiced finding the main idea of a paragraph and finding the main idea of an entire book. Students practiced this skill through literacy center activities as well. Math: In Math, we started the week with a fun Skittles activity to review collecting data and graphing data which we learned before springbreak. Later in the week students were introduced to fractions. Students have practiced how to say fractions, how to write them and how to represent them in pictures. Writing: In writing, students have continued to work on their biography writing. Students have practiced taking notes on books and articles they have read about their person and have started writing their introduction. Some students are working on putting their notes into their own words to write the body of their biography. Science/ Social Studies : Our volcanoes have erupted! Students had a "blast" erupting their volcanoes and seeing what happened to their landscapes. After the eruptions students added new clay to all the areas of the land where the lava went. This represented the new land that comes about from the eruption of a volcano. Students have finished painting their projects and reflected on their learning this week. Students are working on making slide shows explaining the process and findings learned from this project. |
